Gaseous
Fuels and Petrochemical Systems Engineering
Responding
before, during and after crises, Bison
investigates every aspect of natural gas and LP
gas systems and evaluates design, construction,
and operation of individual pieces of equipment
and entire systems, with emphasis on operator
training, including investigating gas explosions,
propane gas explosions and gas fire investigations.
LP gas storage and distribution projects additionally
encompass salt dome storage and operation, tanker
and pipeline transportation, odor fade, control
valve and regulator operation, vapor migration,
and gas tank and cylinder maintenance and repair
safety issues.
The
company has developed special proprietary equipment
in the field of carbon monoxide production / poisonings
and migration investigations (see
CO-DAQ under Specialized Testing).
Multidisciplinary
Approach and Custom-designed Tests
Chemists
work closely with engineers on investigations
of multiform hydrocarbons, including soil gases
and soil gas migrations of both natural and LP
gases, as well as in the identification, composition,
and condition of plastics, rubbers, greases, oils,
and other substances.
Incident-specific
tests and protocols can be custom-designed for
forensic investigations that incorporate specific
metallurgical and chemical tests to determine
whether gas equipment was involved in an incident.
For instance, gas-piping systems are primarily
fabricated from steel, polyethylene, and copper.
The material properties of those mediums and others
are evaluated for all types of damage and failures,
including joining methods (welding, brazing, heat
fusion, and couplings).
